Hope for skilled immigrants over in budget reconcilation
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Senate Democrats and Senator Dick Durbin specifically has thrown out any possibility of providing any relief to skilled immigrants suffering because USCIS wasted thousands of green cards through sheer inefficiency.
Various immigrant groups, lobbyist etc. did meet Senate Democrats and tried to convince them to add the relevant provisions. However the rumor has it that a prominent senator told them that these must be put into a separate bill and passed through the usual process as they are not willing to provide any relief to skilled immigrants.
Senate Democrat’s primary objection supposedly was.
They do not want to solve legal immigration problems without completely solving illegal immigration issues.
They think USCIS will not be able to process backlog even if the green cards are captured and this will impact other visa processing.
They do not want to be seen as helping Big Tech.
Some groups such as immigration lawyers have objected to such moves as it hurts their business which relies on constant renewals of visa.
This basically dashes any hopes for providing relief to Indian immigrants through budget reconciliation and provisions 6K3 etc will not be adde at all to budget reconciliation.
However, we should continue calling Senator Durbin over this issue. He will still not budge on the issue but it will let him know how big this issue is and how it might hurt his re-election changes in future.
